ENGIE Fabricom involved in building AZ Zeno hospital in Knokke

ENGIE, through its various entities, takes care of hospitals and their patients – something you can again witness first-hand by visiting the brand-new AZ Zeno hospital in Knokke-Heist any time this weekend (December 2 and 3, 2017).

Inspired by the work of artist René Magritte, Knokke-Heist’s new AZ Zeno hospital – or more accurately, its new recuperative space – appears to hover over the heart of the landscape of this popular Belgian seaside resort. Its green surroundings and the surrealist architecture and chilled-out feel of this futuristic sustainable building are truly breathtaking.

Every aspect has been carefully thought out to provide top comfort levels to patients and staff: the use of warm, sustainable materials; spacious, airy rooms and wards; the extensive energy-saving measures (a biomass boiler, cogeneration and an energy storage system); and interior and exterior lighting specially researched, designed and built by ENGIE Fabricom.

Creativity in electrics

This new recuperative space includes a hospital with 320 beds, a revalidation centre, a ‘care hotel’, a polyclinic, various auditoriums, a public space and a heliport – all facilities the general public will have the chance to see first-hand on the open days running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3, 2017.

ENGIE Fabricom has not only worked on the site’s lighting but also on all the electrics (both high and low voltage) for the hospital, the car park, the dialysis building and the exterior space. “We had to be very creative, especially when fitting the power cables along the impressive but precarious edges of the building”, explains ENGIE Fabricom’s project manager Jeroen Derveaux.

Comprehensive solutions for the healthcare sector

This is by no means the first time that ENGIE and its entities have put their expertise to good use for a hospital or care facility, with more than 100 of these already calling on the services of ENGIE Fabricom, ENGIE Cofely or ENGIE Axima to perform work which, while low-key, taking place behind the scenes, is absolutely vital to the health of the community. It does this through a wide range of solutions enhancing hospitals’ energy performance, producing renewable energy and ensuring the comfort and safety of patients and staff, among other things, by installing access-control and fire-protection systems. In a nutshell, ENGIE provides a much wider range of care services offered by ENGIE to hospitals than you might expect.
