Smart mobility set to take our roads and cities by storm
New developments such as traffic lights that change to green more quickly when there is no traffic and targeted information about roadworks are making driving a more enjoyable experience. This has benefits for cities too, with fewer traffic jams and less air pollution, as a result of the technological solutions provided by ENGIE Fabricom, a company of the ENGIE Group.
The ENGIE Group is focusing on sustainable and smart mobility. Green solutions such as electric cars, compressed-natural-gas (CNG) commercial vehicles and liquefied-natural-gas (LNG) buses aim to cut CO2 emissions but they are not alone, with measures to improve the flow of traffic also reducing such emissions while enhancing the quality of life in our cities, and so forming an integral part of ENGIE’s comprehensive mobility solutions for the public authorities. Here are just a few examples.
Traffic lights turning green faster
Nobody likes waiting at a red light, especially when there is no traffic coming from other directions. Electronic road sensors monitor traffic at intersections in real time so that lights stay green for longer for those roads with more traffic. This solution also creates a ‘green wave’ with cars able to keep moving at a steady speed by getting through various sets of lights without having to stop, thereby improving traffic flows.
Parking made simple
More and more cities are using dynamic parking guidance systems as electronic signs direct drivers to available spaces while also taking account of traffic levels. The Antwerp city authorities are testing out sensors embedded in the ground in short-term parking areas. These detect whether or not a vehicle is parked in a particular location and notify parking wardens when vehicles stay beyond the time allowed.
Cameras monitoring our roads
Cameras capable of recognising vehicle registration-number plates identify cars causing a lot of pollution or vehicles the police are looking out for. Cities can even prevent unwanted traffic flows by drawing up a list of vehicles that are allowed to enter restricted-traffic areas and using the camera system to track this, providing a great alternative to rising bollards.
Information on urban traffic in real time
As part of the DYNAcity pilot project in Ghent, the Flemish Institute for Mobility (VIM), in cooperation with ENGIE Fabricom, is analysing various data on mobility in the city, such as roadworks and the availability of city bikes or parking spaces. This information will be made available in real time on a platform provided by the city authorities, giving users traffic tips and allowing them to choose the best form of transport at any given time.
LED lighting in tunnels for greater comfort
When entering a tunnel, our eyes have to adjust to the light intensity. The brighter it is outside, the more light is needed in the tunnel to limit the contrast. A novel solution is provided by LED lights, whose adjustability means that the lighting in some tunnels automatically changes in line with weather conditions and sunshine. Moreover, these tunnels require less maintenance because LED lights last much longer, which is also good for the environment.
Smart electronic signs prove their worth when encountering such inconveniences as a broken-down vehicle, an accident or roadworks. Signs over motorway lanes provide information about the lane you are in, so that you know if the traffic isn’t moving, if you need to slow down or if lanes only used at peak times are open. The signs give motorists practical information, such as journey time and alternative routes if there is an accident. The system works using electronic road sensors which continuously monitor traffic and automatically process data to generate electronic messages.
